Damian's thank you message
10 May 2010
Many thanks to the people of Ashford and Tenterden for such a resounding vote at the General Election. It is a real privilege to represent them, and to be asked to continue to do so. There are many challenges ahead both locally and nationally, and they need to be tackled as quickly as possible.
An Election Campaign is always fascinating, and I was particularly pleased that so many people turned up to most of the meetings I held around the constituency. Even in the digital age personal contact is clearly still important.
As for the issues raised, jobs and immigration dominated. People know that the economy is in a terrible mess and what to know how a new Government will help. They also believe that immigration has been out of control for too long, and want big changes to the system.
The Ashford issues at the forefront of the debate were education and housing—not surprisingly. How far and how fast Ashford will develop is still the most important question for many. Greater local control over planning was one of the positive Conservative measures I outlined.
Commenting on his appointment as Minister of State for Immigration, Damian added: “Throughout the campaign my constituents, and people across the country, raised their concerns about immigration with me. In my new role at the Home Office I will work to make sure Britain benefits from immigration, but that it is properly controlled.”
